Samarium

Advanced material. Diverse applications

Samarium magnets are available in a number of different grades that span a wide range of properties and application requirements. Samarium is one of the most advanced commercialized permanent magnet materials today.

Quick Tips

  • Magnetic strength: Samarium magnets are the most powerful magnets after neodymium types.
  • Grades available: Common grades are 18, and 26 - though Samarium magnets are available in grades up to 33.
  • Physical strength: Hard and extremely brittle - can chip or break if dropped or if they snap together.
  • How they behave with temperature: Samarium magnets are very temperature stable - their properties stay within a narrow range up to about 300° C (570° F).
  • Magnet surface: Samarium magnets do not need to be protected for surface rust.
  • Relative cost: Samarium magnets are relatively costly as compared to other materials. They are used primarily where high strength is required in a high temperature operating environment.
  • Care tips: Because Samarium magnets are extremely brittle, take special care in handling them.
  • Assembly tips: Samarium magnets are often assembled into products using "superglues" such as Loctite 325. Avoid placing mechanical stress on this material. Always ensure that bonding surfaces are clean and dry prior to bonding.
